Australian Election 2010

Australian Election 2010 Results: Julia Gillard’s Labor Party Wins – With more than 78% of the vote counted, Australia’s Electorial Commission said that Labour had won 70 seats and the Coalition 71. A Party needs 76 seats out of 150 to get a clear mandate to govern.

As far as the popular vote goes, 50.2% has gone to Labour. Australia’s Julia Gillard claims that this proves that the majority wants Labour to continue to govern. Analysts think that it will be another two weeks before all votes are counted. The reason for this is the counting of overseas votes and postal votes. Most analysts believe that the opposition Coalition, led by the Conservative Liberal Party will likely obtain 73 seats in the final count, with Labour close behind with 72.

A total of 1,198 candidates have selected to run in the 2010 federal election. This national figure includes 349 Senate candidates for the 40 Senate vacancies and 849 candidates for the 150 House of Representatives seats across Australia, according to the reports.
